A Brief History of The Keg Restaurant
The Keg was founded in 1971 by George Tidball, who opened the first “Keg n’ Cleaver” in North Vancouver, British Columbia.
In the following decades, The Keg expanded rapidly across Canada, becoming famous for transforming unique, historic buildings into welcoming restaurants. Notable examples include the Keg Mansion in Toronto, the Keg Manor at Maple Lawn Estate in Ottawa, and the Downtown Winnipeg location, which opened in 1975 in a building that was once the Hudson’s Bay Company Garage.
In the 1990s, David Aisenstat became the new owner and brought a fresh focus on improving hospitality and customer service. During the 2000s, The Keg also began its charity work through The Keg Spirit Foundation.
By the 2010s, The Keg had reached new heights, setting sales records and earning recognition as one of Canada’s top employers year after year. Today, the brand continues to grow and expand across North America.
Celebrating Comfort at The Keg
My Experience with the keg
We recently visited The Keg for a small celebration – nothing major, just wanting a nice dinner out in a comfortable setting. We made a reservation online, which was easy, and were seated promptly upon arrival in a cozy booth – perfect for conversation. The ambiance was exactly what you expect from The Keg: warm lighting, soft background music, and a pleasant buzz from other diners enjoying their evening.
To start, we shared the Baked Garlic Shrimp (around [$20]), which arrived sizzling and delicious. For my main course, I went with the Keg Classic Prime Rib (available on weekends, around [$48] for a standard cut), cooked medium-rare. My guest chose the Filet Mignon (around [$55]), also medium-rare.
The prime rib was incredibly tender and flavourful, served with a rich au jus and horseradish, exactly as described on the menu. My guest’s filet was equally well-received – perfectly cooked and melt-in-your-mouth tender. We both chose the Twice-Baked Potato as our side, a Keg favourite that never disappoints. Our server was attentive throughout, offering refills and checking on our meals with a genuine smile.
What stood out was the combination of the comforting food and the relaxed yet polished atmosphere. It felt special without being stuffy. We finished by sharing a slice of their Cheesecake (around [$13]), a simple but satisfying end to the meal.
This visit highlighted what The Keg does best: providing a consistently enjoyable dining experience with high-quality steakhouse classics in an atmosphere that feels both special and welcoming. The prices felt justified by the portion sizes, quality of the food, and the overall pleasant evening.

Why People said about The Keg
Customer reviews
We end up at The Keg a few times a year, usually when we want a guaranteed good steak without getting too fancy. Last night was typical – friendly greeting, seated fairly quickly (we had a reservation, definitely recommend that on a Saturday). I always get the Sirloin medium-rare, and it was cooked perfectly, just like usual. Came with the garlic mashed potatoes, which are always a hit. My wife tried the Salmon this time and said it was really nice, not dry at all. Service was efficient and friendly, our server checked back but wasn’t intrusive. Yeah, it’s not the cheapest place, but for the quality of the steak and the comfortable, dim-lit vibe, it feels like decent value. It’s just… reliable. You know what you’re getting, and it’s consistently good.

We chose The Keg for our anniversary dinner and couldn’t have been happier. The atmosphere was perfect – cozy booth, nice low lighting, felt intimate despite being busy. Our server was fantastic, very attentive and even brought us a complimentary slice of Billy Miner Pie (which is amazing, by the way!) when she heard it was our anniversary. I splurged on the Filet Mignon and it was worth every penny – melt-in-your-mouth tender and cooked exactly how I asked. My husband had the Prime Rib and raved about it. We started with the Baked Garlic Shrimp, which was delicious too. It made our evening feel special, and while it’s a pricier meal, for an occasion like this, the food quality, service, and ambiance made it totally worth it

Met up with some friends at The Keg downtown last Friday. The place was packed and pretty loud, especially near the bar area, so maybe not ideal if you want a quiet chat. We had to wait about 20 minutes past our reservation time, which was a bit annoying. Once seated, though, things improved. Our server was clearly busy but handled it well. I had the New York Striploin, and it was a really flavourful cut, cooked well. My friends enjoyed their meals too (burgers and another steak). The Twice Baked Potato side is definitely worth getting. Overall, the food was solid, classic steakhouse fare. Good quality, but maybe a bit predictable. I’d go back, but maybe on a weeknight when it’s hopefully less chaotic
